Thursday, April 5, NYC: Lecture: What Does it Mean to be Fat in the Context

Kathleen Lebesco talks at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville. 5:30pm,
Sarah Lawrence College, Slonim Living Room. Free and open to the public

Kathleen LeBesco explores the ways in which the medicalization of morality
vilifies fat people, as well as the strategic escape routes being utilized
by fat activists. She considers how medical information about fatness is
framed in a way that promotes panic, fears of contamination, and oppression,
and examines how people work to resist fat-phobia. LeBesco examines a number
of specific strategies utilized in public discourse about fatness and
evaluates their usefulness to a revolution of bodies. LeBesco, associate
professor of communication arts at Marymount Manhattan College, teaches in
the areas of communication theory and media and gender studies. She is the
author of* Revolting Bodies? The Struggle to Redefine Fat Identity*, and she
co-edited *Bodies Out of Bounds: Fatness and Transgression* and the "Excess"
special issue of *Women & Performance: A Journal of Feminist Theory*. info:

Saturday, April 28th, Asbury Park, NJ: My Big Fat Queer Prom at the Tides
Bistro, 800 Boardwalk. 7-11 pm. The event coincides with the high school
prom "season." The Bistro has a beautiful ocean view and provides the
perfect romantic backdrop to this event.

My Big Fat Queer Prom is an opportunity for the fat and queer communities to
come together for fun and frolic! Many people in both communities were
unable to bring the person they wanted to their own high school prom or
perhaps never even attended their prom for a variety of reasons. My Big Fat
Queer Prom will allow people from both communities to finally experience the
magic of going to a prom surrounded by supportive folks in a safe and fun
environment.

There will be a photo opportunity station complete with Prom Queen and Prom
King crowns and sashes so all attendees can be King and/or Queen of THIS
prom! Light refreshments will be served, there will be door prizes and
plenty of dancing and romancing.

Tickets are available on a sliding scale from $32-$45 dollars per person in
advance and may be obtained by emailing mybigfatqueerprom at yahoo.com Tickets
will also be available at the door for a flat fee of $45 per person. All
proceeds will benefit Nolose, a 501 c 3 organization dedicated to the
community of fat queer women, trans folks and their allies.

My Big Fat Queer Prom welcomes people of all sexual orientations, genders,
and sizes so you don't have to be fat and queer to come to the prom, but it
sure helps if you are!
