[Nolose-outreach] print ad recon

Hello fabulous NOLOSE outreach folks!

If the listserv allows it, I'm going to attach my lists of print
publications, prices, deadlines, and contacts thus far. That will be the
Word document; there should be some additional pdfs with ad rates for
publications that were too complex for my humble Word table.

Before you get to downloading, though, let me give you some good news: Bitch
Magazine and Aggressive Magazine are both willing to do ad trades with us!
Additionally, there are some publications that charge for classified ads in
print but allow for free online advertising, or have free event calendars.
Event calendars are hard to wrangle with newspapers; we might do a listing
for the opening of registration for NOLOSE, the close of NOLOSE
registration, and the date of the conference, or we might figure something
else out with the smart people doing online advertising.

I'm also leaning toward saying yes we should spend money to advertise with
Colorlines, and yes we should advertise with Make/Shift, and yes we should
advertise in Lesbian Connection. It would be good to advertise in POZ, but
we can do that for free on the website in the events listings, which are
organized by country and region of this country, so I think that would be
the best use of our resources there.

Aaaaand...there are some publications that I need to poke again, or who
haven't gotten back to me at all. Curve isn't returning my emails or phone
calls, even about ad rates. And the webpage for the Bisexual Resource Center
was hacked, so I've had some trouble reaching them about BiWomen
newsletter--but I think if I can get them during business hours in the next
day or two, it would be useful and important to advertise with them. I also
think it's important to reach out to IFGE and readers of Transgender
Tapestry, but I'm still waiting on a response from my last query so I can't
tell you if they're willing to do an ad trade or what their rates might be
for us yet. Trikone is difficult to navigate, and it only comes out four
times a year, so I think our time/money is better spent reaching out to the
queer South Asian community through the listservs (I can do this if no one
else has).

As for advertising with print newspapers, queer and not queer, if we have
any extra money it might be worthwhile to run some classifieds before
registration closes in the New England/NY regional queer ones, ask our local
contacts about advertising in the nonqueer ones (like...I could try to ask
Susan Stinson if she thinks it's worthwhile, and maybe you folks have other
contacts?) and stick with online and free events listings for newspapers
published outside of the immediate area, like in Seattle or Portland or LA
or SF or Atlanta. In the local queer ones classified ads tend to run from
$7.50-$25 a pop, sometimes with discounts for running ads over multiple
weeks.

I haven't contacted all of the online magazines/zines/community newsletters
that I still could, since I wasn't sure where the online ad recon people had
gone before, but I think we should advertise with the DeafQueer newsletter
and (if it ever comes back up) Bent. Those will almost definitely be free,
though, so maybe we can talk about that kind of newsletter outreach another
time...

So I'm attaching a big word document with advertising contacts and rates (or
indications to look at specific places for rates) and the last time I
contacted some of them, deadlines, etc.. It should be self-explanatory. Let
me know if you have questions!
