The NOLOSE Community Agreements are a fantastic, radical set of guidelines that clarify what we expect from conference attendees. They were presented by the board in conjunction with 2011’s Gender Policy Change, with the understanding that they would be further developed once we experienced them in action. Now that we’ve had two open-gender conferences using these guidelines (Oakland in 2012 and Portland in 2013), let’s give them a little shine and get them ready for our next conference in 2015!
If the idea of reviewing the policies for interpersonal behavior at Nolose appeals to you, it’s time for you to let your love of process and structure shine! And if you’re no word geek, but you’ve got opinions and patience and a genuine desire to flesh out the agreements we make when we enter our radical fat space, we want you too! We are actively seeking representation from trans people (especially trans women), elders, people of color, superfatties, disabled folks, and parents. This is a great opportunity for long-standing community members who would like to work with us on a project with very clear boundaries.
The Community Agreements currently focus on touch, communication, flirtation, allyship, boundaries, and accountability. They may be extended to cover over areas if the task force feels it would benefit our community. The task force will also discuss ways to help people access the agreements. This includes how Nolose will make the community agreements available and understandable. This also includes how we will encourage people to review and discuss the agreements before arriving at the conference.
Members of the task force will be expected to attend regular phone meetings (once or twice a month) and respond to emails in a timely manner when possible (generally within three days.) Accommodations will be made based on individual needs. The task force will work in communication with the board of directors. At least one board member will be on the task force, but the majority of the participants will be non-board community members. The final product will be voted in by the board before taking effect.
If you are interested joining our task force, have questions, or would like to give input for the task force to review, please email policy at nolose dot org and we’ll be in touch.
